The IV Dry was designed to offer clinicians and the patients they care for, the freedom to use a disposable, single-use, water-resistant, easy to apply and remove, moisture barrier to cover temporary and permanent i.v. sites (including p.i.c.c. line sites), sutured sites, rashes, or other peripherally located areas that would benefit from external moisture protection.
The I.V.Dry was created in 2004 in response to a need for a disposable, reliable and easy-to-use alternative to "make-shift" shower covering methods used in hospitals.
These methods included using plastic waste-basket style bags, surgical gloves with the fingers cut off, and kitchen plastic wrap, which was then adhered to the patient's skin with medical or household tape, in order to "seal" the edges for moisture protection during showers and bed bathing.
These previous methods required additional nursing time and practice to apply and remove the plastic, which often failed to keep the intended area dry.
When using these make-shift methods, moisture-leakage would occur due to water breaking down the tape's adhesive properties and perspiration build-up, under the covering. Secondly, the tape being used to "seal" the edges of the plastic covering often caused patients to feel a "lack of circulation" on the arm. Thirdly, redness, itching and irritation occurred where the tape was adhered to the skin.
The I.V.Dry was created and packaged to be stored in a clinician's pocket for distribution as needed or near the patient, in a drawer or wall dispenser.
The I.V.Dry has been found to be beneficial for both patient satisfaction and nursing efficiency, freeing up critical nursing time while benefitting the patient and maximizing the recommended length of time between site-dressing changes.
